Simulation Based Assessment on Sizing Optimisation for Cold-Climate Variable- Capacity Heat Pump

Appropriate sizing and selection is critical in order to maximize the energy and cost savings potential of air-source heat pumps, especially cold-climate variable capacity air-source heat pumps. Proper system sizing is often dependent on several factors, including climate, building thermal loads and the performance characteristics of the heat pumps. Improper sizing of heat pumps can lead to comfort issues, poor performance and unexpected high utility costs, which can hinder their uptake in the residential market. This paper presents a simulation study evaluating the energy and utility cost savings differences when cold climate heat pumps are under and oversized in single-family housing across Canada. Simulated results are then used to identify sizing ranges that maximize the energy and utility saving potential of these systems.
