Energy-efficient moisture removal is not an acquired art in the HVAC industry. Traditionally, air conditioning systems remove moisture as a by-product; furthermore, they are now designed with the capacity to remove less and less moisture in an effort to boost energy-efficiency ratings (EER) and coefficients of performance (COP). Conversely, as ventilation increases, with make-up air dehumidification becoming a more important part of the air treatment system, new strategies must be found to remove moisture more efficiently. Analyses the psychrometric principle of moisture removal and its application to various mechanical dehumidification equipment. The need for enthalpy and dew-point control is stressed to provide efficient system capacity reduction.
