RP-1738 — Field Measurement and Modeling of UVC Cooling Coil Irradiation for HVAC Energy Use Reduction

The objective of this investigation is to quantify the energy use and economic benefits of UVGI coil irradiation by performing independent experimental research to determine its effect on pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient, and by modeling to predict the energy, IAQ, and economic benefits for a set of building models representative of a portion of the U.S. building stock. The experimental research is a field study that will quantify the pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient improvements resulting from applying UVGI to an already fouled coil in an operating AHU. The modeling research will use the experimental research to establish the energy benefit, the monetization of the IAQ benefit, and the overall economic benefit for a variety of buildings and locations.
