Help control the spread of infections to and among fire service and EMS personnel with the 2022 edition of NFPA 1581, Standard on Fire Department Infection Control Program.

Firefighters and emergency medical service (EMS) personnel can be exposed to a wide array of airborne and blood-borne infectious diseases in their work with the public. The updated edition of NFPA 1581, Standard on Fire Department Infection Control Program, contains requirements for an infection control program that can help reduce or eliminate potential exposures and provide treatment for personnel who need it.

The majority of responses in fire departments are EMS-related. The need for an infection control policy and program is integral for personnel operating in this environment, as members can come into contact with potentially infectious illnesses in their work with the public. Fire departments that do not provide emergency medical services should also have proactive infection control programs, as they still interact with the public through domestic violence situations, hazardous materials releases, and routine structural fires. In all of these circumstances, the potential for infection still exists.

Use the latest protocols to address health risks and help protect fire service members in all phases of their work.

Requirements in NFPA 1581, Standard on Fire Department Infection Control Program, cover the identification, evaluation, control, and monitoring of risks from infectious environments at the fire station, in fire apparatus, during procedures at an incident scene, and at any other area where fire department members are involved in routine or emergency operations. Important updates in the 2022 edition of NFPA 1581, Standard on Fire Department Infection Control Program, can help fire service personnel ensure they have the proper level of protection against infection, including SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).

NFPA 1581, Standard on Fire Department Infection Control Program, applies to organizations providing rescue, fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials mitigation, special operations, and other emergency services, including public, military, private, and industrial fire departments. The standard does not apply to industrial fire brigades.

Help protect fire service personnel from infection in all the stages of their operations by ordering the latest edition of NFPA 1581, Standard on Fire Department Infection Control Program, today. (Print, Approx. 30 pp., 2022)

Minimize occupational health risks.

This Standard contains requirements for the establishment of a written fire department infection control policy and incorporation of infection control in the fire department’s written risk management plan.

NFPA 1581 requires the identification, evaluation, control, and monitoring of risks from infectious environments in fire department facilities, fire department vehicles, emergency medical operations, cleaning and disinfecting of protective clothing and equipment, and other situations that pose a risk to members through occupational exposure to a communicable disease. Requirements apply to public, military, private, and industrial fire departments providing fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical care, and other emergency services.

The 2005 edition was revised to update the information on infectious diseases, update the requirements for vehicles used to transport patients, clarify ambiguous wording, and update the references to other documents.
