This standard presents metallic materialrequirements for resistance to sulfide stress cracking(SSC) for petroleum production, drilling, gathering andflowline equipment, and field processing facilities to beused in hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-bearing hydrocarbonservice. This standard is applicable to the materialsand/or equipment specified by the materials standardsinstitutions listed in Table 7 (or by equivalent standardsor specifications of other agencies). This standard doesnot include and is not intended to include designspecifications. Other forms of corrosion and othermodes of failure, although outside the scope of thisstandard, should also be considered in design andoperation of equipment. Severely corrosive conditionsmay lead to failures by mechanisms other than SSC andshould be mitigated by corrosion inhibition or materialsselection, which are outside the scope of this standard. For example, some lower-strength steels used forpipelines and vessels may be subjected to failure byblister cracking or hydrogen-induced (stepwise) crackingas a result of hydrogen damage associated with generalcorrosion in the presence of H2S.
