LB-07-014 — Airflow Distribution through Perforated Tiles in Close Proximity to Computer Room Air-Conditioning Units

The operational thermal performance of high power density data centers employing a raised floor plenum supply scheme can be strongly influenced by the flow resistance characteristics of the plenum. The layout of perforated tiles can lead to significant variations and possibly reversed flow or warm air being drawn down into the plenum from the facility. Measurements of individual tile mass flow rates were performed on a representative 100 m2 experimental facility, with a focus on characterizing the perforated tile flow rate for tiles located in close proximity to the computer room airconditioning units. The results show a reduction of reversed flow near the computer room air-conditioning units compared to reported data for raised floor data centers with shallow plena.
