HO-82-02-1 — A Look at Single-Phase Motor Designs for Improved S.E.E.R. in Annual Heat Pump and Air-Conditioning Operation

This paper addresses the problem of motor design requirements for an improved Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (S.E.E.R.) for air conditioning/heat pump compressor applications. The proposed Department of Energy (DOE) outdoor temperature profiles together with the approximate compressor hour/load profiles are considered. Several design variations are investigated to determine what improvements, if any, can be realized in the unit for a year’s operation. In addition, the study includes the variation both in actual hours of use and the division in heat pump and air conditioning for two separate regions in the United States. It is hoped that this information may lend insight into the design requirements of motors that might be “customized” for particular geographical areas.
