Preface:

This is the second edition of CSA Standard Z262.5, Face protectors for use in ringette. It supersedes the edition published in 2000 under the title Face protectors for ringette players.

The companion document to this Standard is CSA Z262.1, Ice hockey helmets. This Standard, along with CSA Z262.1, provides requirements for protective equipment for use in ringette.

This Standard has been adapted from CSA Z262.2, Face protectors for use in hockey at the request of Ringette Canada. Because the sport of ringette is very similar to the sport of hockey, the hazards faced in each sport are very similar. Consequently, the requirements in this Standard are very similar to the requirements in CSA Z262.2.

This Standard applies to equipment intended to protect the face of ringette players, goalkeepers, and certain on-ice functionaries from the hazards likely to be encountered during the sport. This edition has been developed to specifically address the need for a reduction in ringette face protector aperture size.

Scope:

1.1
This Standard specifies performance requirements and test methods for face protectors marketed, sold, and intended for ringette.

1.2
The intent of this Standard is to reduce the risk of injury to the face and eyes without compromising the form, appeal, or visual demands of the game. This reduction of risk is based on the use of the face protector
a) as intended within the rules of the game; and
b) in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Note: Ringette is a sport with intrinsic hazards. Participation in ringette implies the acceptance of some risk of injury. Use of a face protector certified under this Standard will not prevent all injuries.

1.3
This Standard specifies requirements for the following items as they relate to face protectors for use in ringette:
a) materials used in fabrication;
b) assembly, design, and finish;
c) areas of coverage;
d) optical requirements;
e) stability;
f) impact resistance;
g) penetration resistance;
h) strength and durability;
i) labels, tags, and markings; and
j) instructions for use.

1.4
This Standard covers the following face protectors as intended for use by players, goalkeepers, and certain on-ice functionaries (e.g., referees, coaches):
a) Type B1;
b) Type B2;
c) Type D1; and
d) Type D2.

1.5
In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
