A65 — Occupant-Centric Sensing and Controls (I-P)

This chapter provides a technical overview of occupant-centric sensing and control, including data collection and modeling approaches. Focus is placed primarily on HVAC-related controls (e.g., where zone temperature is set based on real-time occupancy and/or comfort measurements); in many cases, such control schemes also incorporate predictions about future occupancy and/or comfort states. In previous applications, such occupant-centric HVAC control schemes have demonstrated significant energy savings potential, of 10 to 40%, while maintaining or improving occupant comfort outcomes (Ghahramani et al. 2014; Nagy et al. 2015; Williams et al. 2012).
