Surface Water Heat Pump (SWHP) systems are widely used, yet there is a paucity of design data and documented design procedures. This project was focused on improving data and procedures for design of SWHP systems. Specific contributions include:

  • Improved data for design water temperatures,
  • Correlations for exterior natural convection on surface water heat exchangers (SWHE)
  • Computational models for lakes and SWHE intended for use in design of SWHP systems.
  • Design guidelines based on field experience with SWHP systems, direct surface water cooling systems and related industries have been compiled.
  • Formulation of new design charts and a simulation-based design tool.
  • Analysis of minimum reservoir surface area as a function of system heating and cooling peak loads.

This project was divided into nine separate tasks related to design of surface water heat pump systems as summarized below. The task numbering below follows the original request for proposals; several tasks have been combined (2 and 4; 5 and 6) in the discussion below.
