DE-13-C034 — Coarse Grid Methods for Improving Convective Heat Loss Predictions From Numerical Manikins

Researchers have determined that Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations of the human body require grids consisting of cellcounts numbering in the millions in order to resolve the near body heat flux. This makes it virtually impossible to accurately model a roomwith more than a few people with the resources available to the typical engineer. Some comparisons are made here to see the effect of cell counton the heat loss from a body-contoured and block numerical manikin located in slowly moving upward flow. Possible modifications to thenear body energy equation to accommodate a larger grid for a limited range of Grashof and Reynolds numbers are presented.
