Window-mounted room air conditioners (RACs) first appeared in the United States in the 1930s. Compared to today’s models, these units were large, heavy, noisy and costly. Even so, Wabout 33,000 RACs were sold in 1941.1 Since their inception, RACs have grown in acceptance (and sales) and have become a reliable means to provide space cooling for millions of Americans.
